Jones has been back in training after he featured for Man United’s U21s in their 1-1 draw with Chelsea on Monday night, where Ashley Young played for 90 minutes.
Januzaj has only featured twice since returning from his loan spell with Borussia Dortmund and is yet to start a game under the Dutchman.
Speaking about the pair, van Gaal insists Jones and Young haven’t returned to full fitness whilst Januzaj has suffered an injury which rules him out.
“We have a big squad now, we are training with 26 people and we have to adapt to that new situation again, but it is very promising now.
“Adnan [Januzaj] was injured and he is still injured but he shall also come back, it is not such a heavy injury.
“He is not fit to play in the reserves or in the first team.”
The most important player out of those three for United between now and the end of the season will be Young. Jones won’t get a sniff at centre-back unless Chris Smalling or Daley Bling become injured and Januzaj has a season which he’ll want to forget very quickly.
Overall, United’s squad (injury wise) is heading towards its best condition in a long time but strangely enough it’s these overwhelming injuries which has allowed players like Marcus Rashford to burst through and take centre-stage, so it has had a silver lining.
Between now and the end of the year we’re going to have to string together consistent performances if we are to chase this top four spot and having options in the squad can only be a good thing.
