Manchester United’s U18s continued their upturn in form in the Merit Group of the U18s league with a 7-1 rout of Newcastle United at the Aon Training Complex.
Angel Gomes opened the scoring in the third minute. Indy Boonen sent the ball in across the face of goal, a deflection off Matthew Longstaff sent the ball into Gomes’ path at the back post and he tapped it in.
Newcastle came back into the match to make it a competitive affair but a cruel injury to Oliver Walters, who had to be stretchered off the pitch after a lengthy stoppage, broke their concentration.
Shortly after the game got back underway Boonen doubled Man United’s lead. Gomes, DJ Buffonge, and Boonen, who were a very influential attacking trio throughout the match combined. Buffonge’s cross into the box with his weaker foot found Boonen who headed into the net.
However, Newcastle weren’t out of it yet and in injury time of the first half pulled a goal back through Callum Smith who sent his shot under George Dorrington.
Newcastle held on for the early part of the second half but the Reds were dominant and scored five goals to finish off the game in style. Dearnley scored United’s third, picking up the ball just outside the box. He side-footed his finish from a difficult angle to beat Keaton Marrs in the Newcastle goal at the near post.
Boonen scored his second with just under 20 minutes remaining. Gomes saw a shot blocked by the Newcastle defence but fortunately the ball came out to Boonen who swung his leg at the ball. The shot wrong footed Marrs who was unable to twist himself to make the save.
Tosin Kehinde joined the free-scoring fun. A ball from Gomes bounced off Dearnley and Boonen before Kehinde arrived to slot the ball home. Then Boonen completed his hat-trick. The 17-year-old Belgian again linked up with Gomes and Buffonge. He made a good run around the outside of the Newcastle defence and was picked out with a neat pass from Gomes, before firing his shot home.
A goal from marauding full back Tyler Reid completed the scoring. Kehinde picked out Reid who was powering forward on the right flank. Longstaff attempted to shoulder Reid off the ball but he bounced off the full back who nutmegged Marrs and cemented the victory.
