Manchester United had a distinct lack of cutting edge in the dismal 3-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur last time out and Louis van Gaal will be keen for Wayne Rooney to return to the starting XI against West Ham United in the FA Cup on Wednesday.
Rooney, currently recovering from injury, is expected to take some part in Man United U21s’ clash against Middlesbrough on Monday.
The match against West Ham may come too soon for Rooney but the United captain will be raring to go ahead of the European Championships this summer:
Marcus Rashford started up top against Spurs but he made a minimal impact at White Hart Lane.
Van Gaal replaced the youngster with Ashley Young at half time and it was a bizarre move as it was clear that a role up front did not suit him.
As it happened, United suffered a demoralising defeat which left their top four ambitions in tatters. Exiting the FA Cup would be disastrous in terms of confidence in van Gaal.
