Louis van Gaal provides injury update on Wayne Rooney, Ander Herrera, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Luke Shaw

Louis van Gaal has revealed that Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is fit enough to play more minutes ahead of the clash against Aston Villa.

Rooney recently returned from injury following a length absence but van Gaal claimed that whether he plays against Villa is “dependable on the game”.

Meanwhile, Ander Herrera is being assessed having picked up an injury against West Ham United last time out. Van Gaal also provided updates on Bastian Schweinsteiger and Luke Shaw – the former is unlikely to play again this season while the latter is “doing great” as he recovers from a double fracture of his right leg.

Rooney is one of United’s most experienced players but he will find it difficult to get back into the side ahead of Marcus Rashford, who has been in scintillating form recently.

The 18-year-old scored a superb solo effort against West Ham and Rooney will know he has a fight on his hands to get back into the fold.
