Marouane Fellaini has jokingly admitted that he knew Anthony Martial would miss his shot before the Belgian poked the ball home in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over West Ham United in the FA Cup on Wednesday.
Fellaini scored Man United’s second goal of the evening with his knee after Martial had an effort deflected off a defender.
The midfielder joked after the game that he was not surprised to see Martial’s shot go in his direction.
“I knew he [Martial] would miss because it was his left foot,” Fellaini said.
“I was stood in front of the goal and I just put my knee out towards the target. It was important in the end. It’s always nice to score; it’s good for confidence. Now we have a game on Saturday which we have to win in front of our home supporters.”
Fellaini enjoyed a solid evening’s work at Upton Park and he silenced doubters that had questioned his selection prior to the clash.
The Belgian is oft-maligned but he certainly has his uses, particularly up against physical sides like West Ham. Fellaini will be hoping to keep his place in the side for the match against Aston Villa on Saturday.
