Rooney, making his first start for Man United since February following a lengthy absence through injury, started the move that led to Marcus Rashford’s winner in the first half.
However, van Gaal brought his captain off after 66 minutes at Old Trafford. The Dutchman admitted that Rooney didn’t take too kindly to the switch following the game:
LvG: "He [Rooney] was angry on me because he wanted to play 90 minutes! He had a positive first-half."

Rooney enjoyed a comfortable afternoon’s work against Villa and it was good for him to ease back into first team affairs.
The 30-year-old’s experience should prove invaluable as United head into the crucial run-in, starting with a clash against Crystal Palace on Wednesday.
Rooney will then be hoping to keep United in the hunt for silverware when they take on Everton in the FA Cup this weekend.
