Former Manchester United defender Phil Bardsley believes that Louis van Gaal’s side have looked like a pub team at times this season.
Bardsley began his career at Man United having risen through the youth ranks before leaving for Sunderland in 2008.
The 30-year-old, now playing for Stoke City, was critical of his former side, claiming that their inconsistency has let them down this term.
“It is so frustrating to watch as a Manchester United fan,” Bardsley said.
“At times they look like they are back to their best, and then next week they look like the Dog and Duck. It hurts a little bit, I like to see United challenging for league titles and I don’t see that happening in the near future.”
United have enjoyed an excellent record against the top sides in the Premier League this season but defeats against so-called ‘minnows’ such as Stoke, Bournemouth and Norwich City look to have been their undoing.
Louis van Gaal has to take a large share of the blame for United’s poor form over the course of the campaign as his negative tactics seem to have zapped the confidence from his players.
