Chris Smalling surprised by Matteo Darmian’s goal against Crystal Palace

Chris Smalling has admitted he was surprised to see Matteo Darmian score in Manchester United’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace on Wednesday.

Darmian scored his first goal for Man United at Old Trafford with a left-footed shot in the second half.

The strike came after the Italian had earlier forced Damien Delaney’s own goal. Smalling was pleased with his teammates contribution following the match:

Darmian had been disappointing in recent weeks and he would have been happy to get back on track.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a sparkling start to his United career but his form has dipped due to a combination of injuries and being moved around the back four.

His performance against Palace will give Louis van Gaal a headache when it comes to his team selection for the FA Cup semi-final clash against Everton on Saturday, with Marcos Rojo and Timothy Fosu-Mensah also in contention to start at Wembley.
