Timothy Fosu-Mensah has thanked David de Gea for his penalty save in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.

Fosu-Mensah conceded a penalty with Man United leading 1-0 at Wembley but De Gea saved Romelu Lukaku’s spot-kick with a strong right hand. It was a stunning save from De Gea at a crucial moment in the game which spared Fosu-Mensah’s blushes.

Chris Smalling did end up putting the ball in his own net but Anthony Martial scored in the dying moments of the match to seal United’s progression into the Cup final. Fosu-Mensah was relieved to see De Gea save the penalty:

Fosu-Mensah will be disappointed but there is no doubt that he will bounce back. Louis van Gaal‘s decision to take Timothy off has been criticised by some fans but I think we were all aware how much pressure he would have felt after giving that penalty away.

De Gea seems to have cemented his status as the best goalkeeper in the world following his string of excellent displays this season. United have been poor for large parts of the campaign but there is always a sense that they can get something from a match with De Gea between the sticks.
