De Gea was close to a move to Real Madrid on the last day of the Spanish transfer window last year but a deal collapsed at the last minute due to late paperwork.
The Spaniard seems to have put the episode behind him as he has consistently put in world-class performances for his side over the course of the campaign. Herrera insisted that De Gea is content at Old Trafford.
“I think he is very happy at Manchester United. You can see that. If you are not happy in one place, you cannot play like that,” Herrera said.
“We can be calm and optimistic, first because he is in a fantastic club and if we start winning trophies, it’s easier to keep world class players.
“He is the number one in the world. In England, you know that, but in the rest of the world they think they have better goalkeepers, but I don’t think so. When we win trophies I think he will be more recognised. He has a special talent.
“When you are born with that quality and ability, you are so lucky. The rest of us humans – we have to work more. But what I like about him is he is very calm, he has his feet on the ground and he doesn’t change.”
De Gea signed a new contract at Man United shortly after the collapse of the Madrid deal.
The ease in which United convinced him to sign the contract hinted that a get-out clause may have been inserted but De Gea has shown no signs of being unhappy at the club this season. Whatever happens, it is crucial that United keep him as he is undoubtedly the team’s best player.
