BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has suggested Anthony Martial could become captain of Manchester United some day in the future.
Martial has been in supreme form over the course of the campaign, most recently scoring a last-gasp winner in Man United’s 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final last time out, and instantly become a fans’ favourite for his performances since joining.
Eyebrows were raised when United chose to shell out an initial £36m for Martial in the summer but the Frenchman has blown all expectations of him out of the water and Crooks believes he has the potential to lead the club.
“This lad looked a bit special the moment he walked into Old Trafford last summer. In fact he looks as if he could be a Manchester United captain one day,” Crooks said.
Martial has been in excellent form but it is important not to get too carried away with captaincy suggestions just yet. After all, his English is still poor. That being said, Martial will certainly make a lasting impression on the club if he continues his upward trajectory at Old Trafford.
That being said, it’s very hard not to jump on the Martial bandwagon when it is steaming ahead at such pace. With every passing game he seems to get better and having got 14 goals and seven assists so far his debut campaign has gone so much better than expected.
Heading into next season there aren’t many certainties at United but one thing is for sure – Martial is going to be one of our best players and I can’t wait to see how good he can be with another year’s development, bearing in mind he is still only 20.
