Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has suggested Real Madrid will step up their efforts to sign David de Gea this summer if Manchester United fail to finish in the top four of the Premier League.
De Gea was close to a move to Madrid on the final day of the Spanish transfer window last year but a move collapsed at the last minute due to late paperwork. Madrid’s Keylor Navas, who was set to go the other way as part of the deal, ended up staying at the Bernabeu.
Navas has been in superb form for Madrid this season but Balague believes that the Spanish club are still intent of signing De Gea, particularly if Man United fail to secure Champions League football.
When asked if Madrid will make another bid for De Gea, Balague wrote in his Sky Sports column: “The plan is to build a stronger side for next season – and the plans have changed from earlier on this season because they cannot find a team to buy Cristiano Ronaldo, which means if Ronaldo stays, they will have to renew his contract.
“Keylor Navas has been one of the heroes for Real but earlier this season, the plan was to go back for De Gea – especially if Manchester United don’t finish in the top four.”
United will certainly be in a much better bargaining position if they finish in the top four.
De Gea has not shown any signs of wanting to move away from United this season, and he signed a new contract at the club shortly after the collapse of the mooted transfer last year, but Madrid are usually intent on getting what they want. It will be interesting to see how the situation pans out when the season ends.
