The Dutchman’s future at Old Trafford has come under heavy speculation following a disappointing campaign with Jose Mourinho widely expected to replace him this summer.
Mail are also reporting that van Gaal feels delivering Champions League football will meet the minimum requirement for the season and hopes winning the FA Cup would give Ed Woodward enough reason to keep him on for another year.
He has reached the FA Cup final with United to give the club their first chance to win the trophy in nine years and his side are within touching distance of a top four finish in the Premier League. Nevertheless, I would still be very surprised to see him in charge next season.
Van Gaal’s tactics simply aren’t suited to the Premier League and fans aren’t impressed by the idea of him fulfilling his contract at Old Trafford, and that’s putting it lightly. With the club still in a downturn since Sir Alex Ferguson retired, we simply can’t afford to make another mistake when we decide to appoint a new manager and that includes keeping van Gaal for another year.
United may end the season with an FA Cup trophy and a Champions League qualification but it’s hard to look past the disappointing campaign under van Gaal as a whole and the majority of fans are thinking there is surely no way he could possibly keep his job. Maybe we’re wrong.
