Antonio Valencia delighted with Leicester City man of the match award

Antonio Valencia was named Manchester United’s man of the match in the 1-1 draw with Leicester City.

The Ecuadorian played at right-back and grabbed an assist after his cross was fired home by Anthony Martial to give Man United the early lead.

Overall, it wasn’t a bad performance at all from Valencia. I do think him winning the award is indicative of how poor the majority of the other players were but nevertheless he does deserve some credit.

With Valencia, I’m not really sure where he stands any more at the club because he certainly isn’t our first choice right-back as that is Matteo Darmian or Timothy Fosu-Mensah. Arguably he isn’t out third either as Guillermo Varela has been very good on the whole, so I don’t expect to see him play at right-back all too often.

His best performances in a United shirt came from the right-wing position but he has hardly played there since his devastating injuries a few years ago and has instead turned into a right-back instead. While he did well against Leicester, there were countless crosses he just fired over or times he failed to successfully beat his defender, so it was a far more vintage 90 minutes from Valencia.

I’d be interested to know where you all think Valencia stands from now on and whether you feel this is his last season in a United shirt.
