De Gea was close to a move to Madrid last year but the deal collapsed at the last minute due to late paperwork.
The Spaniard eventually signed a new contract at Old Trafford and he has been in superb form over the course of the campaign. Speaking at Man United’s end-of-season awards, van Gaal praised De Gea, who won the Player of the Season gong for the third year running.
“Everyone knows he was invited to Madrid,” van Gaal said.
“His girlfriend is living in Madrid, his parents, Spanish, Real Madrid is a great club but he is still here and as a manager I am so happy he is here and he deserves to win this title.”
De Gea has almost singlehandedly dragged United to the FA Cup final and within touching distance of a top four finish in the Premier League.
United’s troubles have been well documented this term but there is always a sense that the team can get something from a game with De Gea in-between the sticks.
The hope is that United can convince De Gea to stay in the coming years as Madrid may choose to revive their interest in the summer. Whether United secure Champions League qualification may well play a big part.
