Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea earlier this season, is widely considered to be the front-runner to take over at Old Trafford in the event of van Gaal’s exit.
However, there are said to be reservations among the Man United hierarchy over Mourinho’s character following various off-field antics in recent years. But Collymore insisted that United should be doing all they can to land Mourinho’s signature.
“I think Mourinho would be a no brainer,” Collymore said.
“I’ve already said along with many others that this year has seen plenty of ‘come and get me’ pleas from the Special One, and if he hasn’t learned in that time what United fans want, namely youth, pace and excitement, then he frankly deserves to fail if he gets his chance.”
It is clear that Mourinho wants the United job as he has reportedly turned down advances from Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain.
Van Gaal has led United to within touching distance of a top four finish in the Premier League and an FA Cup final but it’s hard to look past some of the dismal results and performances he has overseen over the course of the campaign, particularly over the Christmas period.
Mourinho is a proven winner and he would no doubt bring the ‘arrogance’ factor back to Old Trafford. But van Gaal has said that he expects to be in charge next season and the situation is not as clear cut as it may seem. It’s safe to say another year of van Gaal would not go down well among the Old Trafford faithful.
