Bayern Munich winger Arjen Robben believes that Memphis Depay should be given more time at Manchester United to settle into the Premier League.
Memphis was considered to be one of the best young talents in the world when he joined Man United last summer from PSV Eindhoven.
However, the Dutchman’s season has not gone according to plan and he has often been left out of the side following a series of disappointing performances. Robben, who plays alongside Memphis for the Netherlands, backed the 22-year-old to make a success of himself in England.
“He’s a very talented player, but you can’t underestimate how big a step it is up to the Premier League, and especially to a big club like Man United,” Robben said.
“He’s still very young – you have to give him some time. The talent is there – he’s got everything that he needs to be a success in England!”
Memphis’ season has been so bad that there were rumours he could be moved on in the summer, although those seem to have been dismissed since the player’s defiant Instagram post this week.
Robben is right in saying that Memphis should be afforded another season at United. One bad season does not make a player and, as his performances in Europe have proven, Memphis undoubtedly has talent.
But you get the sense that it is ‘do or die’ for Memphis next term. Anything less than a positive start to the campaign may see the fans get on his back and ramp up the pressure on him as a result.
