Yaya Toure: I thought it was Manchester United that wanted me, not City

It’s about that time of year where Yaya Toure angles for a move away from Manchester City isn’t it? Correct.

With Pep Guardiola coming in, the man who sold Yaya to City from Barcelona, he knows his days are numbered and when speaking to Nissan he has decided to not only anger City fans with comments but attempted to open the door to a quick switch to Old Trafford.

“To be in this squad that is making history, it’s unbelievable,” Toure said.

“When I was at Barcelona and initially approached by Manchester City I thought it was Manchester United that wanted me.

“My agent had to tell me it was the team in the blue shirts.

“At the time Manchester United were putting Manchester City in the shadows. It was unbelievable. Manchester United is a big club and I respect that club a lot.

“It was a big challenge but I came because I knew they were going to succeed and we would win trophies, compete with the big clubs and with Manchester United.

“This was the king of club I wanted to have a story with and make history with. I made a good choice.”

Once upon a time Yaya was the best midfielder in the Premier League and United fans would have bitten your arm off to snag him from City. He was the man who made the difference against United in a number of derbies but having watched their game against Real Madrid, you could see little he cared about playing for City any more.

Yaya’s ship has sailed in the Premier League and I’d expect City to sell him this summer but there’s not a chance United will be making a move for City’s sloppy seconds. He’s not the player he once was and that’s clear for everyone to see.

Both Manchester clubs might not have been in the title race this season heading in May but with Guardiola going to City next season and Jose Mourinho looking likely to replace Louis van Gaal, all eyes are going to be on Manchester once again.
