Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has admitted that he will be an Arsenal fan on Sunday when the Gunners take on Manchester City.
Man United, currently fifth in the Premier League table, moved to within a point of fourth-placed City with a 1-0 win over Norwich City on Saturday.
The result means that United will move above City into the Champions League places if Manuel Pellegrini’s side are beaten by Arsenal and they defeat West Ham United on Tuesday.
“I am, more or less, a Gunners fan tomorrow,” van Gaal said.
“After the defeat against Real Madrid it’s not so easy for Man City to bounce back. We are still in business. The players were very tired but we have won.”
City go into the clash against Arsenal on the back of a dreadful Champions League semi-final exit at the hands of Real Madrid.
European ‘hangovers’ have proven to be a big factor in domestic form in the past and United will be hoping that is the case on Sunday.
However, van Gaal should never have allowed his side to get into this position in the first place. United barely scraped past Norwich following a dismal display and they have been awful for the majority of the campaign. For a club of United’s resources, it simply hasn’t been good enough.
