Michael Owen: Manchester United were ‘average’ against Norwich City

by Tanveer Arayan

Michael Owen believes that Manchester United were “average” in Saturday’s 1-0 win over Norwich City.

Man United put in an abject performance at Carrow Road that was continually devoid of creativity or attacking verve.

But Juan Mata’s second-half strike eventually secured the win and kept United in the race for a top four finish in the Premier League. Despite the result, Owen criticised Louis van Gaal’s side.

“I thought Manchester United were average,” he said.

“They dominated the game and deserved to win but they weren’t very convincing.”

Owen’s comments were putting it lightly: it was hard to think of a worse performance from United this season.

Norwich are a team fighting relegation but United failed to establish any sort of control at Carrow Road.

Memphis Depay was underwhelming, Jesse Lingard was invisible for the majority of the match and Wayne Rooney looked isolated up top. It would be remarkable if United did make the top four as they have produced barely any evidence to suggest they are good enough. A similar performance against West Ham United on Tuesday would see the Hammers demolish van Gaal’s outfit.
