Anthony Martial‘s season has gone about just as good as any Manchester United could have hoped for.
The baying press were foaming at the mouth with their ‘what a waste of money’ headlines when the baby faced 19-year-old arrived from AS Monaco. A Man United signing who cost a lot of money? The perfect target.
Yet, Martial forgot to read the script and it’s been a poetic journey watching his first campaign ever since that wonderful debut goal against Liverpool which was chosen as United’s goal of the season.
Rarely have I seen a young player absorb the pressure as naturally as Martial, as if it was the fuel to his engine. He’s soaked it all up and used it to drive himself forward to score 15 goals and grab seven assists so far this season.
Fans have taken to Martial so quickly and it’s not hard to see why with his performances and the memories he’s already created for us – his debut against Liverpool and the Everton FA Cup semi-final moment being the two stand-out memories so far.
And Martial has really taken to being a United player. He’s a red now and is clearly happy with how things are going on the pitch, at least in terms of his own performances.
There is nothing more exciting than watching a burgeoning talent use United as the canvas on which to paint the early strokes of their career. As United fans, we’ve been lucky to have seen some of the best over the years – Beckham, Scholes, Ronaldo and Giggs to name but a few – and we’re enjoying plenty of that this season.
United have had a pretty drab three years since Sir Alex Ferguson retired but with the likes of Martial, Rashford and Fosu-Mensah ready to help take us into 2016/17, there is a new face of United emerging and one which can hopefully help us challenge for titles on all fronts but regardless of where we end up, Martial himself is destined to go all the way to the very top.
