Louis van Gaal: Man United affected by emotion of occasion against West Ham United

by Ben Topliss

Louis van Gaal believes his Manchester United side were affected by the emotion of the occasion in the 3-2 defeat against West Ham United on Tuesday.

The Premier League clash was the last ever fixture at Upton Park before West Ham move into the Olympic Park next season.

Man United went 2-1 up thanks to Anthony Martial’s brace but late strikes from Michail Antonio and Winston Reid meant West Ham secured the win. Van Gaal claimed that his players got swept up in the emotion of the game.

“The emotions of the match influenced players, we have to cope with the pressure in the game as Manchester United, but the players can’t be expected to cope with what happened before the game, that was unusual,” van Gaal said.

Save for a brief period in the second half, United failed to establish any sort of control against West Ham and they were often overwhelmed by their opponents.

A West Ham win still looked likely even when United took the lead and the way van Gaal’s side threw the game away was extremely disheartening. Van Gaal has failed to motivate his players and inject some steel into them and for that he must leave the club in the summer.
