Former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes has described Manchester United’s David de Gea as one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
De Gea has enjoyed a sensational campaign at Man United this term, regularly putting in match-winning performances for his side.
The Spaniard recently picked up United’s Player of the Season award for the third year in a row and compatriot Morientes backed De Gea to dethrone Iker Casillas as Spain’s No.1 ahead of the European Championships this summer.
Asked if De Gea is the best keeper in the world, Morientes replied: “For me, yes. Not just because he is Spanish. He is one of the best.
“He did a very good job at Atletico [Madrid]. Iker Casillas is one of the most experienced goalkeepers in our history. But he can pass him. He is young, agile and he has a good mentality. He does something special in matches.”
There had been an argument that Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer was ahead of De Gea but the latter’s performances this term seem to have convinced the footballing world that the United keeper is the best in the world in his position.
De Gea’s displays have been a huge plus point for United but having a keeper as the team’s best player three years in a row tells you everything you need to know about the club’s troubles this season. The hope for supporters is that United are able to convince him to stay at Old Trafford given Champions League qualification is unlikely following the 3-2 loss against West Ham United last time out.
