Manchester United are eyeing up a £25m move for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to the Mirror.
Varane has reportedly grown frustrated at Madrid as he has been unable to break up manager Zinedine Zidane’s first-choice partnership of Sergio Ramos and Pepe.
Man United are looking to capitalise on the speculation by launching a big-money bid for the centre-back.
Jose Mourinho, who is said to be the front-runner to take over at United in the event of Louis van Gaal’s exit, is a keen admirer of Varane having managed him at Madrid. The pair could be reunited at Old Trafford.
United were reportedly close to signing Varane in 2011 when he decided to leave Lens but a phone call from Zidane made him change his mind. Phil Jones was brought in at Old Trafford instead.
Tuesday evening’s game against West Ham United showed exactly why United need to strengthen in central defence this summer. Daley Blind has been solid enough for the majority of the campaign but he was brutally exposed at Upton Park as he was at fault for practically all of West Ham’s goals. All the best sides are built on a stable centre-back partnership and it should be a priority area for United to strengthen in the summer.
