Manchester United forward Anthony Martial will head into this weekend’s fixture with Bournemouth knowing that he can break a historic record at Old Trafford.
Martial currently shares a goalscoring record for players who started their first full season at Man United as teenagers along with Brian Kidd and Wayne Rooney.
The Frenchman, who arrived as a 19-year-old and is now 20, bagged a brace in the 3-2 defeat against West Ham United last time out, his 16th and 17th goals of the season.
Rooney and Kidd both scored 17 goals during their respective debut campaigns, with the latter turning 19 on the day he bagged in the European Cup final win over Benfica.
Martial has blown all expectations of him out of the water this season and it is clear that he will develop into a special talent someday.
But while there is a satisfaction in seeing a so-called ‘waste of money’ continue to silence doubters, there is a sense that United shouldn’t be relying on a 20-year-old to the extent that they have.
Take Martial out the team and it is difficult to see where the goals come from, such is his importance to the side. United will certainly need him against Bournemouth.
