Louis van Gaal: Man United can still attract top players without Champions League

by Tanveer Arayan

Louis van Gaal has dismissed suggestions Manchester United will find it difficult to attract the best players if they miss out on Champions League qualification this season.

Man United are currently fifth in the Premier League and they are relying on Swansea City to beat Manchester City on the final day of the season if they are to stand any chance of securing a top four spot.

When asked about the subject in his press conference on Friday, van Gaal rubbished claims that United will miss out on the top players.

“You cannot say that, you can only say it afterwards,” he said.

“Last year we were also in that situation and at the end we qualified. Still there were players that I wanted that we did not purchase because you are dependable on a lot of circumstances. I cannot discuss that with you as it is a question for the board and the manager.”

United were without Champions League football in van Gaal’s debut season following a disastrous campaign under David Moyes but the club still managed to attract the likes of Angel di Maria and Radamel Falcao to Old Trafford.

Of course, the transfers didn’t exactly pan out as planned but they proved that players would be willing to move to United with or without the Champions League.

It certainly is a crucial transfer window coming up for United, as their business in recent years has largely disappointed. Get this summer wrong, and it is hard to see how the club gets back to the top.
