Mourinho has been strongly linked with a move to Man United for a number of months and reports this week suggested that the two parties have agreed details over a move.
Thompson insisted that a deal is done but also claimed that van Gaal should be given another season at United if he secures a top four position in the Premier League and wins the FA Cup.
“If you’re asking my honest opinion, then I think the deal is already done,” Thompson said.
“There’s been a lot in the papers and United have a very close relationship with Jorge Mendes, Mourinho’s super agent.
There’s also been the talk that they’re still harbouring the idea of bringing back Cristiano Ronaldo, who also has Mendes as his agent, so Mourinho coming in could sway that.
“If van Gaal did win the FA Cup and finish in the top four, then my option is that he should get the other year, but I think it would be extremely difficult for United to go back on an agreement because Mourinho isn’t the sort of guy that waits around.”
Even if van Gaal does win silverware and secure Champions League qualification, that should be considered the bare minimum at a club like United, particularly when you take into account the amount of money the Dutchman has spent since taking charge.
Mourinho is a proven manager who has won trophies at every club he has managed and it is clear that he wants the United job.
If United are to get back to the top, they need to bring the best talent to the club and Mourinho represents a significant upgrade on van Gaal.
