Mourinho, sacked by Chelsea earlier this term, has been strongly linked with a move to Man United for a number of months and reports this week suggested he has agreed a deal to move to Old Trafford.
Van Gaal has led his side to an outside chance of securing a top four finish and an FA Cup final but performances have largely been disappointing under his tenure. Merson insisted United must act now and bring Mourinho in.
“If they want to get anywhere near where they want to be, they need to do it quickly, and there is no manager that can do things quickly like Mourinho.
“His impact is very quick and that’s what United want. Van Gaal has a year left on his contract and if you keep him and then three months into the next season he is not doing well then whoever comes in takes over a struggling team, that’s no good.
“The change needs to be made now, Jose Mourinho is the only man for Manchester United, the only man who can bring quick success.”
There seems to be no logical reason to stick with van Gaal for another year and it looks like the stubbornness of the United board is the only thing standing in the way of bringing Mourinho to Old Trafford.
Mourinho has a poor record of misbehaviour and not placing faith in young players but United cannot afford to stick with van Gaal, whose negative style of play is figured out all too easily by the opposition. Ryan Giggs, too, would represent too much of a risk as he has next to no experience at the highest level. Managers like Mourinho do not come around often and it would be a huge oversight if United ignored him.
