Rio Ferdinand: Man United must consider appointing Jose Mourinho

Rio Ferdinand believes that Manchester United must consider replacing Louis van Gaal with Jose Mourinho in the summer.

Mourinho has been strongly linked with a move to Man United for a number of months following a disappointing campaign at Old Trafford under van Gaal.

The Dutchman has stated that he expects to be in charge next season but Ferdinand insisted that it would be foolish for United to overlook Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea earlier this term.

“Listen, if the club decide Louis van Gaal isn’t the man anymore and Jose Mourinho is in the market, he has to be considered,” Ferdinand said.

“He’s a top manager, someone who’s got great experience, he’s a born winner. So for him to be in the market and not be interested in him, I don’t think that’s wise.”

Mourinho has reportedly turned down positions at Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain since he was sacked by Chelsea as he has his eye on the United job.

Van Gaal has failed to secure Champions League qualification this season (barring an unlikely swing in goal difference) and, considering the amount of money he has spent since he joined, it is a dire state of affairs. Even if he wins the FA Cup this weekend, it is hard to see much of a future for him at the club.

Ferdinand is right: Mourinho is a proven, world-class manager who clearly wants to join United and it would be a huge oversight if Ed Woodward ignored him to stick with van Gaal.
