Netherlands boss Danny Blind is frustrated he had to leave Timothy Fosu-Mensah out of the recent Netherlands squad for their upcoming friendlies but said he had no choice due to his injury.
Fosu-Mensah, 18, received his first call-up to the preliminary Netherlands squad and was set to earn a place in the final shortlist but as he isn’t 100 percent fit, Blind had no choice but to leave him out.
Speaking about Fosu-Mensah, Blind said: “Timothy is 18. There’s a lot come down on him in recent weeks. The reward for this was a place on the shortlist. I wanted him in the final selection, but you have to be fit. And he’s not one hundred percent fit at the moment.
“That’s too bad. I wanted to see him, but I hope I can still see him at work after the summer.”
It’s a really disappointing setback for Fosu-Mensah because he deserves to make his breakthrough with the Netherlands team and has been working towards that opportunity all season. Now, an injury has robbed him of that but hopefully it will only be for the time being.
From Manchester United’s perspective, there are also questions to be asked about whether Fosu-Mensah’s current injury will rule him out of Saturday’s FA Cup final. He started in the semi-final against Everton and although he was hooked off at half-time, the majority of fans would love to see him in the starting XI on Saturday when we face Crystal Palace.
It’s been a brilliant year of progress for Tim having broken through into our first-team with some extremely convincing performances but there is every chance he has already played his last match for United this season.
