Pereira has barely featured in the Man United first team this season and he did not start in the Premier League at all.
There were rumours that a number of teams were interested in taking Pereira on loan in January but van Gaal denied him a move. Pereira admitted he was disappointed that van Gaal didn’t keep his word to play him.
“I wanted to be loaned out in January in order to play more and to keep developing myself, but van Gaal told me that he did not want me to be loaned out,” Pereira said.
“He told me to stay in Manchester because he would use me and that I would play. I told him that was fine, and that if I could stay and play then I would. He did not let me leave. I took the decision and now I’m training, doing my job and waiting for him to fulfil his word.”
Pereira is held in high regard by United fans and coaches but he has rarely been given a chance to show what he can do in the first team. Adnan Januzaj, too, has been cast adrift in the U21s.
The pair have had to watch on while the likes of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Marcus Rashford and Timothy Fosu-Mensah have made the step up this term. It is still very much early days when it comes to their careers but Januzaj and Pereira must force their way in soon if they are to be successful at Old Trafford.
