Matteo Darmian returned to Manchester United training ahead of the FA Cup final this weekend.
The Italian defender has been out of action since he suffered an injury in our 1-0 win over Norwich at Carrow Road but may well be in contention to feature in the squad for our trip to Wembley.
Antonio Valencia‘s in a solid run of form at right-back at the moment so Darmian might find it difficult to displace him but our left-back is still up for debate. Cameron Borthwick-Jackson is a far better choice than Marcos Rojo but neither are certain of starting against Crystal Palace.
It’s been such an odd season for Darmian which started with so much promise in his first few appearances but has since gone downhill dramatically. Louis van Gaal certainly hasn’t helped Darmian by bringing him in and out of the team so often but neither has the Italian’s inconsistent, sometimes very poor, form.
Personally, I’m still confident Darmian can be an excellent right-back for us but the emergence of Timothy Fosu-Mensah this season has certainly changed the landscape a bit, as has the resurgence of Valencia who I think is playing his best football in a couple of years.
I’d be surprised to see Darmian start against Crystal Palace but his ability to play in either full-back position means van Gaal may well choose to have him on the bench at Wembley and he’d be desperate to be involved in that. What player wouldn’t be?
