Manchester United’s Ashley Young: This season has been disappointing

Ashley Young is hopeful that Manchester United can end a “disappointing” season on a high note with victory in the FA Cup final against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Louis van Gaal has overseen an underwhelming campaign at Man United in which his side could only muster a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League. There were also early exits in the Champions League and Capital One Cup.

But a win at Wembley this weekend could provide cause for optimism for supporters moving forward. Young insisted United are focused on the game.

“Obviously for a club like ours not winning the title or fighting for the title is disappointing,” Young said.

“The FA Cup is a massive competition and we have not won it for a number of years. We are not looking to play the occasion. We are looking to play the game and go there and win the trophy.”

Results have been awful this term but the doom and gloom surrounding Old Trafford has been doubly compounded by van Gaal’s dull and unadventurous style of football, which prioritises possession above all else.

Watching United has been tiresome at points over the course of the campaign and the approach goes against everything that the club has stood for down the years.

Even if United win the FA Cup at the weekend, it is clear that van Gaal’s long-term position at the club must come under scrutiny, particularly with Jose Mourinho said to be waiting in the wings.
