Both players’ omissions have come as a huge shock to Man United fans. Although Memphis has been out of form all season, to leave the 22-year-old out of the match day squad entirely for the last game of the season when he’s a player who builds his football on his confidence, it’s such a strange move from a player management perspective.
Borthwick-Jackson will be less affected but absolutely deserves to start for United in the FA Cup final ahead of Marcos Rojo, so fans aren’t particularly happy to have seen him left out entirely.
Here is Man United’s FA Cup final squad vs Crystal Palace (via MEN): De Gea, Romero, Valencia, Darmian, Jones, Smalling, Blind, Rojo, Fellaini, Herrera, Carrick, Schneiderlin, Lingard, Young, Mata, Rooney, Martial, Rashford
Leaving Borthwick-Jackson out when he’s available goes to show that while van Gaal has brought through lots of youngsters this season, he still has a tendency to drop them once a senior player is available again. There’s no way Rojo should be in that starting XI ahead of Rojo.
As for Memphis, maybe being left out is the thing he needed to show him he needs to buck up his ideas but it’s a risky move and one which van Gaal probably won’t have to follow up on as he won’t be our manager next year.
