Louis van Gaal secured a dramatic FA Cup final victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday but he has largely underwhelmed this season.
Man United could only muster a fifth-placed finish in the Premier League and they suffered early exits in the Champions League and Capital One Cup.
It is understood that United agreed a deal in principle with Mourinho prior to the FA Cup win. The club have informed van Gaal that his reign is to come to an end and the announcement of Mourinho will be made on Tuesday.
The FA Cup win has come as a huge lift to supporters. In fact, it couldn’t have gone much better: a dramatic, extra-time win thanks to academy graduate Jesse Lingard’s superb strike.
But it is important to remember that United have been awful for the majority of this season. United have stagnated under van Gaal and Mourinho, a world-class manager, should galvanise the squad.
