Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Ince believes that Louis van Gaal should be given another season at Manchester United.
Van Gaal has come under pressure at Man United following a disappointing fifth-placed finish in the Premier League but he has the chance to end the campaign on a high note in this weekend’s FA Cup final against Crystal Palace.
Ince insisted that van Gaal should be given another season to impress at United.
“But I say give him a chance to continue building something,” Ince said.
“He’s been at some great clubs, won trophies at all of them, and you have got to respect his record. Remember, he’s been on a learning curve about English football and the club has been in transition. Hopefully he’s learned everything he needs to know now.
“With the millions and millions they have spent they should have qualified for the Champions League. That is a major disappointment but doesn’t mean they should sack him and bring in someone who would rip up everything again. Winning the Cup would certainly help his cause.
“I’m all for continuity. Let him go again next season and if it doesn’t work, then make a change.”
‘But van Gaal was on a learning curve!’ Jurgen Klopp was, too, but he has wasted no time in galvanising Liverpool. But he should be given the chance to continue building something! Two years and £250m later, what exactly is he building? A dour side who seem intent on keeping the ball rather than, you know, scoring goals?
‘But if it doesn’t work after next season, then you can change!’ Another season of van Gaal’s awful football would see Old Trafford go into meltdown. And the potential ramifications of another season without Champions League football would be huge. It is absolutely not worth the risk.
There are dozens and dozens of reasons why van Gaal shouldn’t be given another season at Old Trafford. Ince is crazy to think otherwise. When a world-class manager like Jose Mourinho is available, there is no logical reason to keep van Gaal beyond this Saturday’s Cup final.
