Memphis Depay insists Louis van Gaal sacking won’t affect his Man United future

Memphis Depay does not believe Louis van Gaal‘s sacking as Manchester United manager will affect his future at the Old Trafford.

The Dutch boss, who was relieved of his duties on Monday, signed Memphis from PSV Eindhoven last summer after having worked with the forward during his time in charge of Netherlands.

He had high expectations as a result of his price tag and incredible season at the Philips Stadion where he scored 28 goals and registered eight assists. However, he’s struggled to emulate his form in England, he hasn’t been able to cement his place on the first-team and was even left out of van Gaal’s matchday squad for the FA Cup final.

Speaking about his relationship with the board, the Netherlands international is confident he will remain at the club when Mourinho is appointed.

Talking to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf , he said: “A love-hate relationship? I don’t know.

“And now he leaves, as things go in football, as in life, and you learn and you become stronger.

“This does not affect me. I am happy to be at Manchester United and the board is happy with me, so I don’t know why it would.”

Van Gaal brought Memphis to United and he’ll have to impress Mourinho if he wants to commit his long-term future at the club. The Portuguese boss will not be afraid of selling big players as Juan Mata was sold from Stamford Bridge after being named as Chelsea’s Player of the Year for two consecutive seasons.

Memphis is still young, we’ve already seen glimpses of his potential, but he hasn’t been able to show consistency with his football. It’ll take time for him to adapt, although he’s proven he’s capable of playing with flair and it’ll only be a matter of time before he’s shredding teams under Mourinho.

A change in manager may be the boost he needs to take his career to the next level, van Gaal’s structure at United has always been criticised and flamboyant players such as Angel Di Maria never quite fit into the system, but with Mourinho behind him he could go on to become an excellent player for United.
