Teddy Sheringham believes that Jose Mourinho has “what it takes” to become successful at Manchester United.
Mourinho is expected to become the next manager of Man United on Tuesday after Louis van Gaal was relieved of his duties at the club on Monday.
There have been concerns over the Portuguese’s off-field antics in the past but Sheringham, who was part of United’s famous treble-winning side of 1999, backed Mourinho to take his former side back to the top.
“The man has a winning reputation and more than anything, Manchester United have to get back to winning ways,” Sheringham said.
“Mourinho knows enough about English football and the mentality around Manchester United that he may be willing to change his mentality.
“Jose will have seen two managers come and go at Old Trafford, seen all the speculation, he’s been in the country while it has been happening, and he knows what it takes to be Manchester United manager. He knows what people expect.”
After United failed to finish in the top four of the Premier League, the club was left with little option but to sack van Gaal, despite his FA Cup victory last week.
The Dutchman spent upwards of £250m over his time as manager of United but results and performances on the pitch were far below the required level.
Mourinho has been there and done it in terms of bringing success to teams he has managed and he will undoubtedly be an upgrade on van Gaal at Old Trafford. It will be interesting to see how he moulds the squad going forward.
