Begovic: Man United will be a team to be reckoned with under Mourinho

Chelsea goalkeeper Asmir Begovic has backed Jose Mourinho to succeed at Manchester United.

Mourinho’s agent Jorge Mendes is expected in London on Tuesday for talks with Ed Woodward as United look to replace Louis van Gaal, who was officially sacked on Monday.

The Dutchman guided United to their first FA Cup victory since 2004 but failing to qualify for the next season’s Champions League was the final nail in his coffin and he was sacked less than 48 hours after lifting the trophy.

Speaking about United next year, Begovic expects them to be challenging for the Premier League title under Mourinho.

“Manchester United will be a team to be reckoned with next year,” he said.

“They’ll be aiming to get into the Champions League once again, aiming for the top and even aiming to win the league.

“The Premier League is certainly the place to be, it’s obviously the most competitive league in the world and with all the world’s top managers being here, it’s an exciting place all round.

“I think generally having Jose Mourinho football is a great thing. He’s a great character and one of the best managers, it will obviously be great to have him back in football.”

The club sacked David Moyes after Champions League football was mathematically impossible and van Gaal has followed the same fate, even if it was just days after the FA Cup triumph.

Van Gaal spent in excess of £250m during in his time in charge at Old Trafford and performances on the pitch didn’t match the investments made. He’s done extremely well at bringing through youngsters and although he was hit with a huge wave of injuries at the start of the season, it would have been a huge disappointment for fans if the club decided to stick with him for another season.

Mourinho’s arrival will definitely split opinions and there’s no doubt the job in hand won’t be easy but he’s finally landed his dream job in football as United’s manager and there’s no one better placed to help rebuild United than Jose right now.
