Eric Cantona believes that Pep Guardiola would have been a better choice than Jose Mourinho to take over at Manchester United.
Mourinho is widely expected to named as Man United’s new manager this week following the sacking of Louis van Gaal on Monday.
Guardiola had been linked with a move to Old Trafford but Manchester City confirmed a few months ago that he would replace Manuel Pellegrini in the summer. Cantona, a United legend, praised Mourinho but insisted that Guardiola would have been a better fit.
“I love his [Mourinho’s] personality, I love the passion he has for the game, his humour. He is very intelligent, he demands 100% of his players. And of course he wins things,” Cantona said.
“But I don’t think it’s the type of football that the fans of Manchester United will love, even if they win. He can win with Manchester United. But do they expect that type of football, even if they win? I don’t think so.
“Guardiola was the one to take. He is the spiritual son of Johan Cruyff.
“I would have loved to have seen Guardiola in Manchester [United]. He is the only one to change Manchester. He is in Manchester, but at the wrong one.”
Guardiola certainly has a reputation as advocating a more attractive brand of football but, at the end of the day, both him and Mourinho have one thing in common: they win trophies.
After what has been a dismal few years at Old Trafford, it’s fair to say that supporters just want to get back to regularly challenging for the Premier League title.
The Manchester derby will certainly have an added element of bite to it next season, as Guardiola and Mourinho have cultivated a rivalry over the years.
