Ray Wilkins: Zlatan Ibrahimovic could replicate Eric Cantona’s achievements at Manchester United

Ray Wilkins believes that Zlatan Ibrahimovic could replicate Eric Cantona’s achievements at Manchester United if he was to make the move to Old Trafford this summer.

Strong rumours have suggested that incoming manager Jose Mourinho wants to make Ibrahimovic, who is a free agent having left Paris Saint-Germain recently, his first signing at Man United.

And Wilkins believes that Ibrahimovic would be a success at the club if Mourinho brought him in.

“He’s played 52 games this year and scored 50 goals,” Wilkins said.

“He’s got the correct character, he’s almost Cantona-esque coming back into Old Trafford. He’s got a lot in his legs and this guy will be a marquee signing. You don’t need to pay for him as he’s on a free transfer, it’s just his wages.”

Cantona joined United relatively late on in his career in 1992 but he cemented his status as a club legend in just five years at Old Trafford, with his swagger and class endearing him to supporters.

Ibrahimovic, at 34, is certainly entering the twilight of his career but his goalscoring record speaks for itself and he is showing no signs of slowing down.

Nobody will ever come close to matching Cantona’s impact at United but the similarities between him and Ibrahimovic are there in terms of their brashness and arrogance, both on the pitch and off it. Available on a free, the risk is relatively low with Ibrahimovic and United could do worse than bring him in.
