Arsenal legend Thierry Henry believes that Jose Mourinho will bring instant success to Manchester United following his appointment as manager of the club on Friday.
Mourinho, who had been the subject of strong rumours linking him with a move to Man United for months, finally brought an end to the speculation by signing a contract to take over at Old Trafford this week.
The Portuguese has enjoyed widespread success all over Europe and Henry backed Mourinho to take United back to the top.
“I think it’s great for the league and great for Manchester United. It’s a new era now,” Henry said.
”We all know what Jose Mourinho can do and it was clear they were always going to go for him. There’s no need to talk about how good he can be, we all know he can be amazing. Everyone now at United is dying for success and that’s personally what I associate them with.
“He has a certain way of playing and people might not say it’s the United way or be concerned about the youngsters. He has to carry on with the young guys that have done well this year — Marcus Rashford, you can’t stop that.
“A lot of the time at Real Madrid his teams outscored Barcelona. It’s about winning for United at the moment — the fans want instant success and he can give them that. Because they haven’t made the top four it will have made it more difficult to attract big players but with Mourinho, they can probably now attract the players they want.”
Mourinho’s reputation has been damaged by an awful Premier League title defence at Chelsea last year but he had previously been heralded as one of the best managers in the world. One season doesn’t make a manager and there is no reason to doubt that he will be anything but successful at United.
But, for now, it’s safe to say that supporters are just getting excited about watching their team play again. United’s brand of football had become sterile under Louis van Gaal and Mourinho should inject some life back into the squad.
