Andy Cole believes that Jose Mourinho will have a point to prove following his appointment as manager of Manchester United.
Mourinho signed his contract to succeed Louis van Gaal as manager of Man United on Friday following months of rumours and speculation.
The Portuguese had previously been out of work having been sacked by Chelsea last year following a disastrous Premier League title defence. Cole, who won numerous trophies at United during his playing days, backed Mourinho to succeed at Old Trafford.
“He has something to prove as an individual and he will try to get Manchester United, one of the biggest powerhouses in football, back on the right track,” Cole said.
“Hopefully it will be a marriage made in heaven and we can start competing again.”
Mourinho is a famously confident manager who is full of bravado and the failure at Chelsea would have bruised him. The hope for United supporters is that he has learned from the experience.
United cannot afford another mediocre season but, in Mourinho, they have a manager who is the closest thing to a ‘safe bet’ in terms of success.
Mourinho has won numerous trophies over his career at clubs such as Inter Milan and Real Madrid and there is no reason to believe that he won’t deliver at United, too.
