Gary Lineker believes that Jose Mourinho will be able to attract some of the world’s best players to Manchester United.
There had been concerns that Man United’s inability to qualify for the Champions League this season would impact their plans for the summer transfer window.
But confirmation of Mourinho’s appointment as United’s new manager on Friday has provided cause for optimism. Former Tottenham striker Lineker claimed that it is “only a matter of time” before the best players come to the Premier League.
“Having Mourinho, for example, will help United to attract players,” Lineker said.
“The Champions League is a massive draw and it is a problem for Manchester United that they are not in it attracting superstars.
“But they are still an enormous club and some players will view it as a chance to join and build something successful. They can perhaps sell it that way.
“We are the wealthiest league in the world, so it is only a matter of time before some of the really big stars in world football come to our league. The big managers now are coming here, therefore the big players will follow.”
The initial signs have been good following Mourinho’s appointment. Chiefly, Zlatan Ibrahimovic has been strongly linked with a move to United. Although he is entering the twilight of his career, Ibrahimovic remains a world-class player and his capture would be a coup.
As well as Ibrahimovic, the likes of James Rodriguez, John Stones, Joao Mario and Raphael Varane have been linked with moves to Old Trafford.
Mourinho will undoubtedly bring success back to United and his stature in the football world means there is much more optimism surrounding the club than there was under Louis van Gaal.
