Rio Ferdinand has shared his excited reaction to Cristiano Ronaldo’s winning penalty in the Champions League final last week.
Ronaldo scored the winning penalty for Real Madrid at the San Siro stadium in Italy after their clash against Atletico Madrid finished 1-1 after extra-time.
Ferdinand and Ronaldo won the Champions League together with Manchester United in 2008 after Sir Alex Ferguson’s side beat Chelsea on penalties. On that night, Petr Cech saved Ronaldo’s spot-kick (although he had scored during normal time) but he proved to be the hero this time around:
When you are as committed to working as hard as @cristiano does to do what he does year in year out at the highest level you deserve some fortune/luck…..he didn't have his finest 120mins in a #realmadrid shirt but he got the fortune to be the man with the opportunity to score the winning penalty….i was always told as a kid – you work hard, you get lucky! Lucky is to get the opportunity to take the winning pen, after that it's down to nerve, technique & composure….game won! #HalaMadrid #Ronaldo #UCL
The video will serve to remind United supporters of how successful the club once was.
Ferdinand, alongside Nemanja Vidic, was part of one of United’s most formidable ever defences while Ronaldo has developed into one of the greatest players of all-time over the course of his career.
United have a long way to go until they are to reach the dizzy heights of victory in the Champions League. Qualifying for the competition would be a start. Hopefully, Jose Mourinho is able to bring success back to the club.
