Manchester United’s Chris Smalling scored the winning goal as England defeated ten-man Portugal 1-0 at Wembley on Thursday.
Smalling latched onto a cross by Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling and planted a header into the net to secure the win for England in the warm-up friendly ahead of the European Championships later this month.
The defender became the third Man United representative to score for England during the period of friendlies after Marcus Rashford and Wayne Rooney bagged against Australia last week. It was a neat goal which should give Smalling confidence ahead of the Euros.
England didn’t put in the best of performances against Portugal and they still have plenty of work to do if they are to succeed in France.
As for Smalling, there is a sense that he has dropped off in terms of his performances. He was world-class during the first half of the season but he failed to reach those heights towards the end of the campaign.
New United boss Jose Mourinho will have a keen eye on the defender as he looks to finalise his plans for the team ahead of next season.
