Marcel Desailly insists Jose Mourinho had been targeting the Manchester United manager role since he left Inter Milan.
The Portuguese boss finalised his deal during last weeks negotiations with a three-year contract with an option to stay at the club until at least 2020.
After leaving Inter, Mourinho joined Real Madrid, where he spent three years, before returning to Chelsea in 2013. He was sacked by the club in December after a disappointing start to the campaign, before being appointed Man United boss in May.
Speaking about Mourinho, former France and Chelsea defender Desailly claims he had been targeting the job since at least 2010.
“I was in Mexico with him at a FIFA conference,” he said.
“Remember, when he left Inter Milan to go to Real Madrid [in 2010]?
“At the time, he said he would come back to England. But his plan was to go to Manchester United, not Chelsea.
“This was his main target. He respected the club. The worldwide exposure is through Manchester United.
“Now, he has got the key from them. The other one [Louis van Gaal] spent €200 million. He will spend another €250m, also. And he’ll build up something good, I’m sure.
“He has some problems because he has Juan Mata, who he didn’t want at Chelsea.”
It looks like he’s finally landed his dream job, United is the seventh job of his 16-season management career. The longest he has stayed was at Chelsea during his first tenure. There he served three full terms before being sacked by them for the first time in September 2007.
Mourinho will be looking to help United contest for silverware after disappointing tenures under van Gaal and David Moyes. He’s a proven winner, he’s won silverware at every club he’s managed and fans are hoping he’ll bring his luck to United.
The Portuguese boss will enjoy considerable power in identifying new signings as he will allegedly have the last say on all transfers, with United not planning to appoint a sporting director. It’ll be an interesting ride for United fans and there’s no doubt Mourinho will attract some world-class names to play at Old Trafford.
