Pele wishes Marcus Rashford luck ahead of European Championships

by Tanveer Arayan

Brazilian legend Pele has wished Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford luck as he prepares to represent England at the European Championships this summer.

Rashford, 18, was named in Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man squad for the tournament earlier this week following a meteoric rise at Man United during the 2015/16 season.

His story echoes that of Pele, who scored two goals in the 1958 World Cup final as a 17-year-old. The former Santos forward spoke about Rashford in a recent interview.

“I’ve heard of Rashford, I was almost the same age as him [when he first went to a major tournament],” Pele said.

“I want to wish him the luck I had in the game.”

Of course, Rashford still has a long way to go to match the achievements of Pele, who is widely considered to be the greatest player of all-time.

But the United youngster has made a remarkable start to life in the game. Since his debut in February, in which he scored a brace, he has scored on his Premier League debut (twice), his Manchester Derby debut and his England debut, also finding time to win the FA Cup in-between.

Rashford was rightly rewarded for his efforts this week after being handed a new deal by United and the future is a bright one for what is a precocious young talent.
