Bastian Schweinsteiger delighted by Jose Mourinho’s arrival

Bastian Schweinsteiger is happy to welcome one of the best coaches in European football to Manchester United.

The World Cup winner struggled with fitness during his first season at Man United but will be looking to bounce back as Jose Mourinho enters the fold as the manager of the club.

The 31-year-old was keen to stress that his focus is currently on the Euros but applauded United for acquiring the two-time Champions League winning manager.

Speaking about Mourinho, Schweinsteiger said: “I think we did a great job getting Jose Mourinho to Manchester, one of the best coaches – if not the best – in European football.

“But we will get to the topic of Manchester United later.

“We are all happy that we got a coach like that, but right now the players are thinking more about the Euros not about United.”

Mourinho has won league titles in all four of the countries he has coached in including three in the Premier League and two each in Portugal and Italy and Schweinsteiger is hoping for him to continue that trend at Old Trafford.

Schweinsteiger’s Germany will be expected to qualify for the knockout stages of the Euros and to be playing football deep into the summer. The German missed 20 league games last year and will have the summer to wipe the cobwebs off and get into good shape before returning to his club in an effort to seal a spot in Mourinho’s preferred XI.

When we signed Schweinsteiger I thought he was going to become our midfield general but injuries thwarted his debut campaign at United. Maybe next year, under Mourinho, Bastian will re-find his best form – that would be fantastic.

A fully firing Schweinsteiger as well as Zlatan Ibrahimovic under Mourinho? That’s a serious amount of winning firepower.
