Timothy Fosu-Mensah insists Manchester United is his main priority after pulling out of the Netherlands squad in May as a result of a groin injury.

The 18-year-old received a surprise call-up for the friendlies against Republic of Ireland, Poland and Austria, but told national team coach Danny Blind he was unavailable due to physical problems.

He is confident his time will come for Netherlands in the future, but is focusing on returning to full fitness after a successful breakthrough into the first-team under Louis van Gaal last season.

“A groin problem was causing me too many problems,” he said.

“I told the national team coach about it and also informed the doctor. I need to rest. If I do too much now, I will be sidelined during preseason. We also have a trip to China coming up with Manchester United. I have to be fit for that. It’s a long journey and we will be training hard.

“I will meet with my physio in two weeks’ time and we will do everything to make sure I will be ready for the first training of the new season.

“The national team coach has ensured me that he is keeping a close eye on me. I am still only 18. My time will come. I am focused on United now. I was happy with the call-up for Netherlands and the coach will keep following me.”

After making his debut in the 3-2 win over Arsenal in February, he went on to make ten appearances and four starts in his first season with the senior side.

He is a versatile player and has been used across the back four, he has already expressed his desire to develop into a top player under new boss Jose Mourinho and will be looking to cement his place on the first-team.

Fosu-Mensah definitely impressed last campaign and was United’s best player against Tottenham Hotpsur in their second fixture of the season. It looked like he held the team together, despite only being 18, United conceded three goals in six second-half minutes just moments after he was subbed off and since then has proven to be a very valuable player at the club.
